Wonderful CCM knit example from the Hartford Whalers American League affiliate worn by Kastelic for Bimgo during the 1988/89 AHL season. 1988 CCM production tag stitched directly below shoulder pipping inside neck.
Excellent usage showing on both sleeves featuring board paint transfers, board burns, blood staining and fraying along cuff stitching. Good scuffing and board paint showing near and on sleeve numbers.
”Pucky The Whale" patches sewn on each shoulder. Some popped stitching showing inside neck. Front logo shows good wear with some puckering from washing, puck/stick marks and blood stains. Lower front of jersey shows more of the same great game wear with good general filth showing.
Heavy areas of board burns and board paint transfers showing on front and back right hem featuring a series of vivid reddish board paint transfers. Similar board paint transfers showing just above back hem on lower right portion of the body as well.
Excellent interior wear showing with very heavy pilling showing inside both sleeves; some pilling showing inside back hem. Velcro in fight strap torn away from base and remains unrepaired. Small style CCM patch heat-glued affixed to back right hem. Colorful 'Team World' lettering logo sewn on back left hem; the only season the Team World logo appeared on Bingo jerseys.
Biting Suspension: Kastelic might be best known for a 20-game suspension he received from the AHL while wearing this very jersey. Kastelic was forced to sit out a quarter of the league's season after biting and striking linesman Frank Quigley during Binghamton's Dec. 30, 1988 game at Springfield. The incident took place while Kastelic was fighting Springfield's Rod Dallman. As Quigley tried to break up the fight, Kastelic bit him. Still struggling to get out of Quigley's grasp, Kastelic accidentally hit his forearm against the linesman's head. The incident drew a game misconduct penalty at the time, but AHL president Jack Butterfield and vice-president Gord Anziano both happened to be at the game, and wasted little time in further punishing Kastelic. They announced the automatic 20-game suspension for attempting to injure an official on Jan. 4, 1989. It marked only the second time in AHL history that a player had been suspended for endangering an official. Ironically, Kastelic would be at the center of another biting incident in Bingo several weeks later when he was bitten on the hand by Kevin Kerr during a fight on March 11, 1989; Kerr was suspender for the remainder of the AHL season for this incident.
Kastelic fought three times in this jersey: Twice on Dec 10th v Stephane Guerard of Halifax and versus Rod Dallman on Dec 30 in Springy when the biting incident occurred.
Kastelic wore this jersey before embarking upon a successful 3 year run in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers; his NHL efforts in total yielded 719 penalty minutes in only 220 games.
